Saturday 2nd May ‘The Plant Sale’ from 2pm at 46, Cambridge Rd

The wonderful gardens, created by the current Lady Tollemache, a Chelsea gold medal winner, surround a moated hall that was completed in 1510 for the family. The gardens include herbaceous borders, and walled kitchen, herb, rose and wildflower gardens. There is also a 400 acre deer park.                                 

Facilities: These include the Coach House Tearoom, Ice cream parlour and Coffee shop plus the Stables Shops with gifts, Suffolk crafts and plants from the Helmingham Nursery.                   

Accessibility: The site is wheelchair accessible and staff will point out alternative routes for those with wheelchairs or walking aids.

All day visit, leaving Girton Church at 9.30am and returning around 5.00pm

CALLING ALL GARDENERS – COMPETITION TIME

The Girton Allotment Society and the Girton Garden Society will be organising a mini fruit, flower and vegetable show in the main marquee

The categories chosen for our part of the show represent the fruit, vegetables and flowers most likely to be ready in early July, weather permitting!

We would like to encourage all adults and children living in the village to show off their gardening and growing skills by entering any or all of the following competition categories:

1v.   3 sticks of rhubarb                                                                                         1f.  3 stems of one type of flower in a tall, colourless glass jar or vase    
2v.   5 beans (Runner or French)  2f.  A bunch of garden flowers in a clear jam jar  (no labels)
3v.   5 potatoes (any variety)  3f.  A bunch of roses (no more than 7 stems) in a clear jam jar (no labels)                
4v.   3 onions (any variety)   
5v.   3 different vegetables   
6v.   A small plate of fruit

Rules.  All entries must be brought to the main marquee between 10 and 11.30am and a small entry card filled in.

  •  The vegetables and fruit will be displayed on 22/23cm white paper plates.
  •  Judging and awarding of rosettes will take place at 12noon.
  • The winners will be announced soon after judging has finished and entries can be collected later.

Wednesday 15th July – visit to East Ruston Old Vicarage Gardens, Norfolk NR12 9HN

The gardens were established in 1973 by Alan Gray and Graham Robeson as a 32 acre garden close to the North Sea, surrounded by arable prairie. It incorporates exuberant and innovative planting as well as more traditional formal designs.                                                                                

Facilities: There are two Tea Rooms with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating in sun and shade. Light lunches and locally sourced cakes are available. The Plant Sales and Nursery contains plants that are propagated from those grown in the garden.                                                      

Accessibility: There are woodlands, meadows and lawns which may be difficult for those with mobility problems.                                                                                                                       

All day visit, leaving Girton Church bus stop at 9.45am and arriving back at about 6.30pm.
